Koda was the star of a run-down roadside attraction, a giant silverback gorilla with a strange habit nobody ever explained. When the park finally closed, a sanctuary gave him the space and care he’d never known.

At first, he seemed to be thriving. Then came the untouched meals, a swelling belly that didn’t match his shrinking frame, and night footage of him picking something up from the ground and lifting it to his mouth.
