#15: Turning a Martin Scorsese Film into a Sitcom Was No Small Task
It’s not every day a Martin Scorsese movie becomes a prime-time sitcom. Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore won Ellen Burstyn an Oscar and had a gritty, grounded realism. Adapting that into a half-hour CBS comedy in 1976 required some serious reworking.

Characters were reshaped, storylines streamlined, and the diner became the central hub. Linda Lavin stepped into the role originated by Burstyn, while Vic Tayback reprised Mel from the film. The result was something entirely its own — less arthouse road movie, more comfort-TV comfort food.
