#30: Tommy Grew Up — and the Show Struggled to Use Him
Philip McKeon was just 12 when Alice premiered in 1976 as Alice’s son, Tommy. In the early seasons, their mother-son bond grounded the show emotionally. But as McKeon grew into his teens, the writers had a harder time weaving him naturally into diner-centered storylines.

With more focus on Mel’s and the adult workplace dynamic, Tommy appeared less frequently in major plots. It’s a common long-running sitcom challenge: kids grow up, tones shift, and suddenly the premise evolves. At Mel’s Diner, the coffee stayed hot — but home life gradually took a back seat.
