#8: When in Doubt, Add a Funny Hat
The writers of Alice had a wonderfully simple backup plan for when a joke just wouldn’t land. If they wrote themselves into a corner and couldn’t find a punchline strong enough to save the scene, there was an agreed-upon solution: put someone in a funny costume — or at the very least, a ridiculous hat.

It’s such a perfectly sitcom-era fix. Instead of overthinking the comedy, they’d lean into visual silliness and let the wardrobe do the heavy lifting. And honestly, at Mel’s Diner, a surprise outfit gag feels right at home — just another day where the coffee’s hot and the comedy’s a little scrappy.
