Alabama: Randy Owen

Randy Owen is the lead singer of Alabama, one of the most successful country bands ever. The group scored dozens of number-one hits, including “Mountain Music” and “Song of the South.” They sold over 75 million records and entered the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

He never left home. Owen was born in 1949 and grew up on a cotton farm on Lookout Mountain near Fort Payne. He started the band there with his cousins. Today he runs a cattle farm nearby and helps raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Alaska: Sarah Palin

Few politicians have jumped into the spotlight as fast as Sarah Palin. She became Alaska’s first female governor, then ran for vice president beside John McCain in 2008. Later she wrote books, starred in reality TV shows, and even sang on “The Masked Singer.”

Palin was born in Idaho, but her family moved to Alaska when she was a baby. She grew up in Wasilla and later served as the town’s mayor. She still lives there today, and she made a run for Congress in 2022, though she lost.

Arizona: Alice Cooper

Before Alice Cooper, rock concerts rarely had fake snakes, guillotines, and buckets of stage blood. He helped invent “shock rock” with songs like “School’s Out” and “Poison.” His spooky shows still pack arenas, and he joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

As a kid named Vincent Furnier, Cooper lived in Detroit until his family moved to Phoenix. He formed his first band in high school there. Now he lives in Paradise Valley, plays lots of golf, and runs teen centers that offer free music and dance lessons.

Arkansas: John Daly

Golf fans love John Daly for his huge drives and wild style. In 1991 he won the PGA Championship after getting in as the very last backup player. He added the British Open in 1995. His loud pants and “grip it and rip it” attitude made him a legend.

California is where Daly was born, but he spent a big part of his childhood in Dardanelle, Arkansas. He went on to play college golf for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Today he still calls Dardanelle home and keeps playing on the senior golf tour.
