#29: English Language & Literature
English language and literature attracts students who love books, writing, language, and big ideas. Many imagine becoming editors, writers, teachers, publishers, journalists, or communications professionals. The degree feels especially appealing to people who are strong with words and want a college major that lets them read deeply and think creatively.

The regret usually appears when graduates leave school and find that “good writer” is not always a clear job title. The skills can be useful in many fields, but the first step can be hard to find. Without internships, teaching credentials, or a portfolio, the degree may feel too open-ended.
