Shoppers at a Toronto Ikea couldn’t believe their eyes when a tiny monkey in a shearling coat ran through the parking lot in 2012. The fashionable capuchin, named Darwin, had escaped from his owner’s car and quickly became a viral sensation.

Darwin roamed the store, peeking at furniture and startling customers before being safely caught. No one was hurt—but the whole country debated whether monkeys belonged in malls… or homes at all.
